Nov. 20, 2023, 2:03 p.m. Updated 35 {"title": ["", "ULTRA (Ultra-powerful cells for Low-emission TRAnsport)"], "description": ["", "\nThe ULTRA project targets next-generation battery improvement at the cell level with the development, scale-up and commercialisation of AMTE Power's innovative power-dense Ultra-High Power (UHP Gen 1 and Gen 2) to pre-production variants. Commercial 21700 cylindrical energy cells, sourced by AMTE, will be used with efficiency focussed commercial BEV (Magtec) platforms and with the charger technology (Petalite) required to ensure they can all be fast-charged. The ULTRA project is 100% focused on energy storage and energy management, and every consortium-partner of the ULTRA project is essential to ensure the successful deployment of UK-manufactured next-generation Li-ion cells, their raw materials, and downstream supply chain. Avocet Precision Metals will supply the metallic raw materials for the UHP cells, and their participation will allow them to progress from a distributor of precision metals to a UK based manufacturer. Avocet shares the concerns of their customers about the danger of interruption/breakdown in long-distance supply chains, particularly to smaller volume cell manufacturers. Their solution is to progress towards creating a UK centre of excellence for tab cell development, established to support the evolution of AMTE's UHP product. \n\nMagtec will design and integrate new battery packs and management systems, utilising the commercially supplied cylindrical energy cells instead of the originally planned AMTE UE cells. AMTE will be providing Magtec with 16,000 21700 BAK cells in two batches. This will allow Magtec to build three prototypes covering 2 x 119 (400V) and 1 x 118 (600V) batteries instead of the 3 x 119 and 6 x 118 as originally planned. This will then cover prototypes to test on one vehicle (Isuzu chassis) only instead of two as originally planned.\n\nThe first battery pack prototype will be the 119 (400V) which is the most complex variant out of the two and the design has evolved in such a way that the learnings from this battery prototype will transfer to the less complex e-RCV 118 battery variants (600V). This, as a result, removes the need to carry out on-vehicle tests on more than one vehicle hence Magtec will be removing the purchase of the Dennis Eagle eRCV from their scope without having to sacrifice any of the exploitation planned. \n\nThe forecasted vehicle sales for both Isuzu and Dennis Eagle vehicles will remain the same as well as Magtec will be validating both battery variants fully on a battery component level using a combination of in-house rig based testing and Reg100 testing through subcontracting. The degree of testing on the complex variant will be increased to make it comprehensive of the eRCV variant, due to which an additional task is added under Magtec WP10 called \u201810.5 Additional Durability Testing\u2019. There will be nine additional tests to be performed compared to the three as originally planned (see C2.2 Impact to Scope & Schedule section) incurring approx. £50,000 of subcontracting costs and approx. £70,000 material cost. Additionally, £474,750 worth of funding from Materials and Capital Expenditure will be reallocated to Labour from Materials and Subcontract which will support the extra validations planned. Magtec is also generating two new jobs in support of this (one Electrical Engineer and one Software Engineer). Following these activities, both battery variants will be ready to function on vehicles and Magtec will still be able to meet the originally planned TRL and MRL figures. The only risk for Magtec is a delay in the completion of their deliverables.\n\nPetalite's patented Ultra SDC charger for BEVs has the potential to address market trends and needs for shorter charge time (higher power charge), improved modularity and lower lifetime cost, and will allow for the fast charging of all four vehicles considered by Magtec.\n\n"], "extra_text": ["", "\n\n\n\n"], "status": ["", "Active"]}
