Description
Building Better, backed by the National Housing Federation, is an alliance of 31 housing associations and local authorities working together to increase the use of modern methods of construction (MMC) in the social housing sector.
Set up in 2018 as part of the National Housing Federation's Greenhouse innovation programme, Building Better aggregates demand from its members so they can procure high quality, operationally net zero, offsite homes, confident in the fact that these homes will meet their customers' needs. Building Better also collaborates with offsite manufacturers, listening to their feedback, learning and innovating together.
It is the only solution that is built by and for social housing providers, has national reach, and shows clear evidence of delivery through member collaboration during a time of crisis. Our vision is for the social housing sector to be the lead house builders of the most sustainable homes for their residents, the planet, and their businesses.
The key objectives of this specific project are to 1) develop the metrics we need to evidence the performance of net zero homes and their impact on the people living in them, and 2) the mechanism to ensure homes keep getting better over time. This includes measuring how heating and cooling technologies are working in terms of energy performance, ventilation and warmth, as well as customer ease of use and affordability, developing a best practice post occupancy evaluation process that is replicable across the sector, and building the experiments that will test how we can support customers use their heating and cooling technologies in the easiest way possible alongside sensor technologies.
