Decarbonising the heating, power and transportation sectors are two of the priorities of the UK government to reach the target set for 2030 and 2050\. Our project is perfectly in line with the UK Priorities. It focuses on the valorisation and conversion of local waste streams, (distilleries waste, fashion waste, coffee ground, plastics and food waste) into high-value products such as heat, electricity, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuel. In this project, we want to develop a novel catalytic membrane gasifier system that is able to convert several types of waste, maintaining constant composition of the producer gas generated, thus differentiating the system from other types of gasifiers.

This is advantageous compared to conventional technology as the range of feedstock material utilisation is significantly increased, which would not otherwise be available for the production of SAF. In terms of logistics, environmental performance and financial viability, this is an enabler to installing combined heat and power systems in rural areas.

The technology differs from standard incineration, in that the environmental impact is reduced by a factor of 90% in terms of GHG emissions. Disposal of waste to landfill or incineration is a major emitter of GHG to the environment, this can be significantly reduced.

The preliminary results achieved in the feasibility study will allow the installation of a demonstration / test unit of 0.5MW on the Eden Campus at Guardbridge. The system will be used for research activities and provide heat and power to the technology park. In the second part of the project, a plant of 2MW will be installed to create a district network to provide heat and power to Guardbridge and Leuchars and create the first heating and power decentralised district in Scotland.
