Description
Reaching net zero means tackling all sources of emissions and heating for homes and workspaces makes up almost a third of all UK carbon emissions. Our vision is to directly contribute towards decarbonisation of buildings through rolling out an innovative energy saving and affordable device, called _Thermocill_.
_Thermocill_ which is 100% manufactured in the UK, is an innovative device, placed underneath a window board, made out of 100% recycled Nylon. Through redirection of warm air from a radiator underneath a window, a wall of warm air is created adjacent to the window. This results in considerable reduction of the energy required to heat up the space, hence reducing the energy consumption and CO2 emission. Thermocill also has important health benefits, as it significantly reduces the possibility of condensation around the glazing unit and the formation of black mould. Thermocill's patented modular design will fit any internal windowsill with a radiator or heater below it and therefore, it can be fitted in both new-build and retrofit household projects (particularly housing associations and council homes) as well as commercial buildings such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes, student accommodations, etc. Thermocill products were launched in Oct 2021 and are currently being installed in thousands of homes in the UK. The Wigan Council was the first council to invest on installation of Thermocill across all their 22,000 properties across the Borough.
The main objective of this application is to seek funding to take Thermocill through the six stages approval process of Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) and therefore be awarded with equivalent SAP points. SAP, which is managed through Building Research Establishment (BRE) Group on behalf of the UK government, is the official methodology used to assess and compare the energy and environmental performance of dwellings. SAP points are used for many policy purposes, including the production of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and for Building Regulation compliance. In this project, Thermocill Limited will work with partners from BRE and University of Manchester to achieve the above goal.
As part of the government's objective to increase energy efficiency and achieve net-zero carbon targets, all newly rented properties will need an EPC of at least Band C from 31st December 2025\. Therefore, the successful registration of Thermocill under SAP would be a significant milestone as it will allow properties fitted with Thermocill to receive points on the EPC certificates and thus increase their overall energy rating.
