Jan. 28, 2023, 10:52 a.m. Updated 35 {"title": ["", "The Kelp System"], "description": ["", "\nThe oceans are the world's largest source of untapped energy. The UK is a global leader in the wave/tidal energy sector, both in terms of its natural resources and technical capabilities. Power Technology (2021) reported the UK has the potential to access £76bn of the future tidal market with the resulting significant carbon emission reductions and job creation.\n\nHowever, wave energy is far behind in development compared to other renewable energies and currently not on track to contribute to net zero by 2050\\. Barriers include high construction, installation and maintenance costs due to challenging conditions in offshore locations.\n\nSeaweed Energy Ltd have taken inspiration from seaweed's motion and its ability to reduce carbon from the atmosphere. The Kelp System provides a game-changing affordable, sustainable and renewable source of electricity from nearshore sea waves, with the added potential to mitigate coastal erosion. It utilises a completely different technology and harnessing location compared to others in the wave energy industry.\n\nThe Kelp System is based on Oscillating Wave Surge Converters where the power take off system (PTO) operates in the nearshore wave zone. The cyclical surge motion of the water energises / drives the (PTO). Many individual PTOs (100s) are linked together and placed along the near-shore line (at suitable water depth to just be covered at low-tide) in a multi-level parallel pattern to maximise wave energy harnessing. The cumulative effect of all of these, sends hydraulic power to an onshore energy storage facility, where it is used to drive electrical turbine to generate electrical power on demand. This "Field Effect" provided by hundreds of small simple elements adds up to a credible energy storage and power generation capability.\n\nThe Kelp System has the potential to provide direct power to harbour, business and coastal communities and also transfer/connect to National Grid, tested as part of our future sea trials at European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) at Orkney.\n\nKey features of the Kelp System include:\n\n* Non-Batteries and on demand Potential Energy Storage System.\n* Cost-efficient, reliable and simplest wave energy converter system in the market.\n* Majority of the Kelp System is based onshore, which decrease cost of development, installation and maintenance.\n* The electricity generation plant is land based, reducing cost, providing easy maintenance and increased reliability.\n* Underwater installations ensure zero visual impact, suitable for tourist locations.\n* Initial designs aim is to create a system which will be capable of generating **1MW** per day\n\n"], "extra_text": ["", "\n\n\n\n"], "status": ["", "Active"]}
