Description
Fuel cells are an attractive technology for heavy-duty, high usage vehicle applications, due to their high energy density and quick refuelling times. Research and innovation in fuel cell system and powertrain development has focused on polymer electrolyte fuel cell technology. This PhD project hopes to develop an SOFC powertrain plant model to explore the perceived advantages of fuel flexibility, high system efficiencies, and opportunities for thermal heat utilisation for SOFCs. Due to the high temperature of SOFC operation, start-up and shut-down procedures, as well as control strategies for transient behaviour will need to be developed.
