{"description": ["\nThe UK's Clean Maritime Plan Strategy commits the maritime sector globally to reducing emissions of GHGs from shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008\\.\n\nThis ambitious target will require the hard work of industry members to innovate and provide low emission technical and commercially viable solutions that allow the targets to be met whilst maintaining continued industry economic growth.\n\nThe maritime industry is divided into several main vessel types with 5.2% of all ships that are not dedicated to the transport of bulk goods, cargo, fuels or passengers. These vessels represent the general market within which SK operates with its Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV's).\n\nInnovation has already led to commercially viable USV's for a wide range of marine applications such as geophysical survey, offshore equipment inspection, military surveillance and coastal asset monitoring. USV's already have an emissions advantage over the equivalently capable crewed vessel as the removal of crew supporting infrastructure means the vessel can be smaller, lower weight and require less fuel for the same operation.\n\nCurrently, SK USV's are diesel-electric hybrid drive. Propulsion comes from electric motors. The electrical requirements come from diesel generators that feed into a battery bank which, in turn, feeds into propulsion.\n\nThe Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition -- Strand 2 project aims to design and develop technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the UK's maritime sector.\n\nAddressing this need, the next best energy dense fuel that can offer zero emissions is Hydrogen. Hydrogen fuel cells as a power source for maritime applications is gaining momentum with a few vessels in operation within UK. Application of this fuel source to a USV will be an industry and a world first, putting UK in the lead of zero emissions uncrewed technology, leading to clean maritime growth and economic benefits.\n\nIn order to achieve this goal by March 2022, SK proposes to retrofit an existing 12m USV with a hydrogen fuel system and perform a series of tests and sea trials to qualify and quantify the system performance against the USV's existing GHG emitting fuel and record a range of metrics under real world maritime use.\n\nData gathered from testing and trials will be utilised for the design and build of future 12m USV's as well as used for extrapolating out across the existing and imminently planned larger SK vessels to bring the fuel option to the USV market.\n\n", "\nSEA-KIT's proposed project - Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition \u2013 Strand 2 is the design, build and testing of a new and novel hydrogen fuel cell engineered by Bramble Energy and modification of an existing Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) to enable installation of the fuel cell as a replacement to the existing diesel engine and demonstrate a route to fulfilling the UK's Clean Maritime Plan Strategy commitment of reducing emissions of GHGs from shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008. SEA-KIT (SK) supply long endurance highly capable USV's to the offshore industry for survey and construction support work. The vessel has a dual diesel-electric hybrid drive. Propulsion comes from electric motors powered from battery banks that are charged by in-situ diesel generators. \n\nThe project will use Bramble Energy's (BE) printed circuit board fuel cell (PCBFC), the PCBFC will be marinized and designed around SK's USV. Utilising PCBs, rather than metallic or graphite end plates, BE's PCBFC technology is more suited to rugged, marinized environments. The PCBFC system will be designed in an enclosure within the USV to prevent sea water ingress and resulting corrosion from sea water. \n\nThe project provides a route to replace one of the diesel generators with a hydrogen fuel cell and demonstrate an offshore operation with zero carbon emissions. The retention of one of the diesel generators, which will not be used during the demonstration, significantly de-risks the programme.\n\nThe benefit of using this existing vehicle as a basis for a demonstrator is that much of the existing propulsion hardware can be used, with little to no modification. This will allow the project team to focus on the innovative power system and not the already proven technology required for the fuel cell operation.\nPart of the exploitation plan soon after this project is to install the fuel cell into the USV and demonstrate zero emissions USV operations in a marine, saltwater environment to demonstrate the fuel cell capabilities.
