Atout Process Ltd has developed an electrical capacitance tomography system which is capable of imaging the flow of dry solids in a pipe when conveyed by air or under gravity. This ECT system can give the concentration, in-situ density and velocity of the product in the pipe anywhere in the cross-section, and these values may be integrated to give the total mass flowrate occurring in the pipe. In this way the product can be weighed without any contact or intrusion and with no interruption of the flow. We believe this device could be applied to the measurement of the mass flowrate of dry solid biofuels and other dispersed solids enabling better control of burners and hence improved efficiency of operation of biofuel energy generation systems.
