Description
An often overlooked aspect in designing for Net Zero is the education of children to teach them the value of the environment and importance of sustainability. In a survey conducted by the Co-operative most parents state that they don't have the tools or knowledge themselves to properly teach their children yet have the desire to do so. The survey also found that 60% of parents state that they have developed more sustainable practices through educating their children. Teaching good habits in children has to been undertaken at an earlier age (pre-school) and has to be driven by a mixture of guardians and teachers:
An Academic study conducted in 2017 by educational scientist Farhana Borg concluded that:
_"a significant and positive relationship between young children's learning about sustainability and the involvement of teachers and guardians in sustainability-related discussions and activities. It is important to ensure that children are given the opportunity to participate in discussions and practical activities, both at home and at preschool_
Play based learning is well established as a means of teaching children good habits however there exists an opportunity to leverage Mixed Reality play to harness the benefits of storytelling via physical, digital and real world interactions.
This project will investigate solutions that aim to teach the next generation about sustainability through Mixed Reality story based play.
