MODULASE addresses a combined £Billion market for illumination sources within wide
ranging applications spanning biomedical, semiconductor manufacturing, metrology,
entertainment, defence and industrial manufacturing sectors.
There is a growing need across all of these sectors for improved illumination technology over
incumbent lamp and discrete laser diode sources to enable, for example, improved metrology
within semiconductor device manufacture, greater reliability of light sources for use within
surgical illumination, delivery of light within smaller optical fibres for endoscopy and higher
power white light for enhanced definition digital cinema.
These markets are truly global in nature, and hence the new illumination technology needs not
only to be high performance but capable of global installation and support.
MODULASE addresses this opportunity, building on Fianium’s unique White Light
(supercontinuum) technology that has revolutionised global scientific research over the past
decade, and transforming it into a fully field-serviceable illumination source that can be
manufactured in extremely high volumes.
The project will deliver a prototype white light laser with average power in excess of 20
Watts, continuous spectral coverage from the blue (<400nm) to the Infrared (2400nm) and
having plug and play interchangeability of all key modules or components.
The project will push the limits of optical fibre connector technology to have removable
connections at pump powers up to 50-Watts and peak optical powers up to 100 kilowatts.
Moreover, this will be achieved between a range of very dissimilar optical fibres implemented
within state-of-art white light laser sources.
Successful delivery of the prototypes will present a fantastic opportunity to further exploit the
rapidly expanding global market for industrial and scientific laser technology to the benefit of
UK companies and the wider UK economy.
