A Self Contained Rainwater Harvesting Disinfection System
Rainwater Harvesting Systems are becoming increasingly important in the UK both in terms of reducing the demand on drinking water supplies and reducing the impact of flooding when excessive rainfall occurs. Such systems are however prone to biological contamination, with consequent risks to public health. UV sterilisation systems can be used but increase significantly the negative impact on carbon emissions that rainwater harvesting systems have on the environment. It is the objective of the proposed development to produce a self contained disinfection system which generates the electrical power needed for its operation from the gravitational potential energy in the harvested water and accomplishes adequate disinfection to avoid the need for UV sterilisation to reduce the risk of public health issues.
