The proposed project will deliver the 1st stage towards the next generation of beverage can manufacture. By radically changing the current manufacture process of beverage cans away from a cold, high force metal forming system to one that has significant environmental and economic benefits. This project is specifically focussed to deliver and demonstrate the benefits within one stage of the beverage can manufacturing process, however the lessons learned throughout the project will potentially be able to be deployed, with further development post project, to the complete canmaking process. The benefits for the worldwide deployment of the innovation in this project to half of the 300 Billion plus cans produced is the reduction of over 57,000 tonnes of raw material useage equivalent to the reduction of 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
