Maintaining correct tyre pressures is done poorly and irregularly. It is our goal to make that
process automatic; specific to the tyre, accurate and easy to use. Results from Bridgestone
Tyres annual safety campaign concludes that tyre under-inflation is costing the EU €2.8
billion each year in wasted fuel adding 4.8 million tons of CO2 emissions; such is the cost of
car drivers’ unwillingness to use current tools. There has to be a better way to significantly
reduce this waste caused by neglect.
In the Bridgestone study 71% of motorists where driving on underinflated tyres. 10% underinflation
results in a 2% increase in fuel consumption, a 10% reduction in tyre life and a
significant decrease in braking performance.
WheelRight Ltd is developing a road mounted device which, when driven over by a vehicle
with pneumatically inflated tyres, calculates the pressure in all of the vehicle’s tyres, as well
as measuring vehicle weight and load distribution.
The successful deployment of this technology has the potential to save the UK £1Bn in fuel
alone at pump prices and 2.6Mt of associated CO2 (private and commercial) every year. A
message the UK Government reinforced in its recent “Action on CO2” advertising
programme acknowledges the fuel saving potential of ensuring vehicles run on correctly
inflated tyres.
The Department for Transport report that illegal, defective and under-inflated tyres were
responsible for more than 1,210 road casualties in Great Britain during 2010.
WheelRight technology has the potential to dramatically cut fuel and tyre waste and the
associated carbon emissions and increase road safety.
