April 11, 2022, 1:48 a.m. Updated 35 {"title": ["", "Novel purification technology for biogas from anaerobic digestion"], "description": ["", "\nThe anaerobic digestion of organic substrates (e.g. manure, sewage sludge, organic fractions\nof household and industry waste) produces biogas. Biogas is made of carbon dioxide, methane\nand traces of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is particularly harmful when biogas is used\nin combustion engines as even low levels of hydrogen sulfide are associated with engine\ncorrosion and wear. Consequently hydrogen sulfide needs to be removed before biogas is\nutilised; current removal methods are costly and represent a significant expense to the project\noperators - particularly those who operate small scale anaerobic digestion plants.\nMost existing hydrogen sulfide removal technologies, e.g. water scrubbing and activated\ncarbon filtration, have been designed for much larger scale centralised installations. For small\nscale operations (e.g. farms) this technology is not economically viable. There is a clear\ndemand for a biogas cleaning technology with lower capital and running costs to make the\nprocess economically viable. Effective hydrogen sulfide removal will ensure that the biogas is\nsuitable for electricity generation and feedback into the national grid. It will directly support\nthe UK to achieve its ambitious target of increasing the number of small-scale on-farm AD\nplants and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with manure management.\nAerocover\u2019s proposed solution is to develop a filter medium to remove hydrogen sulfide and\nother harmful gases from biogas. Unlike most conventional gas scrubbing systems, it will not\nuse chemicals and will be a cheaper alternative to activated carbon filtration.\n\n"], "extra_text": ["", "\n\n\n\n"], "status": ["", "Closed"]}
