{"title": ["", "Biotech - Aerofilter for small scale anaerobic digestion plants"], "description": ["", "\nThe anaerobic digestion of organic substrates (e.g. manure, sewage sludge, organic fractions\nof household and industry waste) produces biogas. Biogas is made of carbon dioxide,\nmethane and traces of hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is particularly harmful when\nbiogas is used in combustion engines as even low levels of hydrogen sulfide are associated\nwith engine corrosion and wear. Consequently hydrogen sulfide needs to be removed before\nbiogas is utilised; current removal methods are costly and represent a significant expense to\nthe project operators - particularly those who operate small scale anaerobic digestion plants.\nThere are currently 78 small scale anaerobic digestion plants in the UK, the majority of which\nconvert their biogas into electricity. The number of small scale (farm based) plants is forecast\nto reach 1,000 by 2020 in the UK. Similar growth trends are forecast for Europe and\ninternationally.\nMost existing hydrogen sulfide removal technologies, e.g. water scrubbing and activated\ncarbon filtration, have been designed for much larger scale centralised installations. For small\nscale operations (e.g. farms) this technology is not economically viable. There is a clear\ndemand for a biogas cleaning technology with lower capital and running costs to make the\nprocess economically viable. Effective hydrogen sulfide removal will ensure that the biogas\nis suitable for electricity generation and feedback into the national grid. It will directly support\nthe to UK achieve its ambitious target of increasing the number of small-scale on-farm AD\nplants and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with manure management.\nBiotec\u2019s proposed solution is to develop a filter medium to remove hydrogen sulfide and other\nharmful gases from biogas. Unlike most conventional gas scrubbing\n\n"], "extra_text": ["", "\n\n\n\n"], "status": ["", "Closed"]}
