Description
The type/amount of waste produced by the £2.2bn UK cut-flower & indoor plant industry are poorly characterized; preliminary primary research shows waste management practices are poor/non-existent. Waste is largely cut-flower waste that could be converted via Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to valuable products (renewable energy and plant growth medium); reducing carbon emissions and diverting waste from landfill. Waste management within the sector will be transformed as growers, wholesalers and retailers seldom have effective waste management structures in place. This would enhance the sectors sustainability whilst enabling contribution to UK renewable energy, carbon reduction and landfill targets.
