Oil pipelines are susceptible to corrosion, this can lead to leaks which cause environmental damage.

In the transition to renewables, oil and gas have an interim role to play, but reductions in infrastructure spending means existing systems need to last longer than originally planned. Procedures are in place to prevent leaks in pipelines, including using corrosion inhibiting chemicals, although these chemicals are often themselves environmentally hazardous. Furthermore, these chemicals are often dosed at a single concentration, which takes no account of the dynamic nature of production systems and are often not monitored successfully.

We have a unique, patented product, originally inspired by point-of-care diagnostic testing, which helps with the management of these chemicals. An R&D project has recently been completed to automate the data processing and digitise the output of these tests, meaning it can be used by pipeline owners themselves. Sales have begun, predominately in Europe, and we now seek to expand the use of this innovative product to other territories, namely USA, Nigeria and Malaysia. All these areas have aging, but critical pipelines which are protected with chemicals.

This project would allow us to work with already identified companies on the ground, to undertake market research and engage with potential customers. Armed with new information outputs will be: the building of a database of corrosion challenges in each territory; a honing of our marketing message to persuade businesses to 'green' their pipelines to prevent oil leaks and environmental damage; and engage with enthusiastic corrosion exports on the ground in relationships that one day may evolve into distributorships.
