{"title": ["", "Enhanced AD from OMB Technology"], "description": ["", "\nIn 2009 the Scottish Whisky Association reported that the industry produced over 458M litres of whisky. Industry norms calculate that each litre of whisky requires 9KWh of energy and produces 11 litres of aqueous by-products: the pot ale and spent lees. In the same year the industry consumed an equivalent of 8% of all Scottish electricity output [50TW] and produced over 5 billion litres of by products.The opportunity arises as a result of the favourable climate that currently exists to encourage long term investment in UK renewable sector. Demand for renewable electricity is buoyant and small scale Anaerobic Digesters (AD), which can utilise the waste products to generate gas and electricity, can take advantage of both the feed in tariff and renewable heat incentive which provide 20 year guaranteed returns. These incentives ensure that anaerobic digestion is now a commercially viable technology and finance companies under vendor financing agreements are willing to invest in such infrastructure. At the same time the whisky industry is facing the prospect of tighter EU backed environmental legislation as Scotland starts to implement its national Zero Waste Policy in the period 2010-25. A key strand of this long term policy seeks to harness the energy content of waste streams and convert it into useful energy.This project seeks to harness the latest advances in micro-bubble technology and apply them to the whisky industry. The uptake of Anaerobic Digestion within the industry has been slow. Pay back periods for conventional AD units are often in excess of 10 years. Laboratory scale experiments have shown that micro-bubble technology can significantly improve the performance of AD. If this improvement can be translated at a commercial level then it can significantly reduce the payback period and hence the attractiveness of AD. If fully implemented it would allow a distillery to generate between 5-10% of its energy needs from its own waste products.
