Description
There is tremendous interest in the development of battery technologies that do not use lithium, because it is not clear that lithium availability will meet demand for electric vehicles and grid-scale storage of renewable and low-carbon electricity. Sodium is plentiful, and divalent battery chemistries based on calcium and magnesium can offer enhanced electrical energy storage due to the higher charges and thus number of electrons stored. But we do not have the materials to make commercially viable batteries with these elements. This project will find new electrodes and electrolytes to enable these technologies.
