X-Wind Power Ltd aims at bringing to market economically viable wind turbines below
100kW. The objective of the proposed project is to validate the core technology developed by
X-Wind: a unique high-efficiency, low-noise, low-cost and reliable 2-bladed Vertical Axis
Wind Turbine. With trust and support from Vestas Wind Systems, the world’s largest wind
turbine manufacturer, X-Wind proposes to design, build and deploy a set of 4 prototypes.
For the first time in the medium-scale wind market, X-Wind intends to combine innovative
design with robust manufacturing processes from automotive and large-scale wind industries
to deliver efficient and reliable products, which will deliver higher return on investment to
customers.
The proposed project will include 3 main stages and be completed in 12 months. Firstly, a
6kW prototype will be designed with particular attention to validation of the cost structure of
X-Wind products. Secondly, the 6kW turbine will be taken from digital drawing board to
reality. A set of soft tooling will be made and 5 prototype turbines will be manufactured.
Finally, 4 turbines will be erected and tested thoroughly in order to confirm the performance
and reliability of X-Wind systems.
X-Wind will leverage results from this project to demonstrate the company’s technology
benefits, thereby facilitating finance of the launch into production of its products. Market
research has highlighted strong growth potential for the medium-scale wind market. X-Wind
has devised a two-fold route to market strategy with a strong network of distributors to deliver
its small-scale 6kW turbines, and a direct and systematic approach of energy intensive
organisations to offer its flagship 80kW turbines. Upon successful completion of its business
plan, X-Wind will create more than 60 direct UK jobs, contribute to at least 10% of the UK
medium wind market, generate substantial export revenues, and as a net result support the
government 2020 clean energy targets.
