Typically these rotors weigh 75-\n95 tonnes delivered, which is the limit of the current technical capability at SFEL.\nSFEL has encountered issues relating to the internal quality of the forgings. The\ncompany is also seeking improved gas consumption and press efficiency during the\nforging process. There is a continuing demand in Europe and China for these types of\nrotors as power generation moves to 1 OOOMW super critical technology. Currently\nAlstom require one rotor every 6 weeks and Harbin Electric Company in China\nrequire four rotors per year.\nIn order to produce such forgings consistently SFEL need to tackle critical\nsteelmaking issues and forging challenges. The current manufacturing route results in\nunacceptable levels of rework and increased risk of failure.\nThe first stage of this project requires fundamental research of the steelmaking\nprocess in order to explore the possibilities of implementing tundish technology. This\nwould be unique in this type of manufacturing process and will give SFEL a\nsignificant advantage against competition by dramatically improving steel cleanliness.\nThe second stage of the project will concentrate on ingot and forging research and\ndevelopment. Here, computer simulations will be carried out in order to develop the\nmost suitable technology in terms of ingot and forge tooling to manufacture these\ntypes oflarger rotors. This would represent a new market opportunity with access to\nmarkets valued in excess of £200 million per annum. SFEL has also been\ninvestigating with various customers the market for turbine units for nuclear\napplication.
