Description
DWR is developing a Floating Instream Tidal and Solar (FITS) Power Plant that has the potential to supply a significant proportion of the Myanmar power requirements. The FITS Power Plant incorporates two vertical axis turbines and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels and has an innovative modular design which can deliver 200kWp rated capacity to the end user. The Power Plant has been designed for low-speed and high-speed river flows and is currently at a mid-stage development phase. This project will support the development and fabrication of a full-scale demonstrator and shall be tested at a river site location in Myanmar.
The Power Plant’s technology guarantees a predictable and consistent energy output, unlike wind, wave or solar power, and can contribute to the baseload power requirements of energy off-takers. It will reduce the reliance of off-grid communities on diesel generators, and, through training and employment, enable local communities to take ownership of their energy needs.
The design of the Power Plant focuses on composite materials for the blades and lean optimised fabrication processes. This makes it simple and cheap to produce.
