Wind Technologies has developed a newly configured and patented induction motor
technology for use in industrial variable speed drive (VSD) applications. It offers substantial
reductions, projected as high as 20%, in the system capital costs as compared to conventional
VSD technologies by utilising a fractional-size converter. It hence enables a far greater
proportion of motor applications to benefit from the energy efficiency and improved
environmental impact of VSDs. The core technology has been progressively developed up to
a working and tested 250 kW size by the Company for use as a generator for wind power
applications, but it can also be utilised as an electrical motor in VSDs.
The aim of the project is to study, assess and prove the market opportunity for a new and
patented electrical machine technology, the Brushless Doubly-Fed Motor (BDFM), for VSD
applications. The proposed Proof of Market project will enable us to assess the potentials of
the technology as a low-cost solution for VSD applications by studying the market needs,
potentials and trends, technology fit and economics, and compatibility with energy efficiency
legislations, which will set the foundation for commercialisation operations to move to the
next phase.
