Description
Industry in the UK is responsible for the production of 41.1 million tonnes of waste every year, of which food and beverage manufacturing produces 1.3 million tonnes of food waste (DEFRA). Research has demonstrated that reducing levels of food waste is the fourth most effective solution in fighting climate change (ReFED). Additionally, in order to meet the UKGov's Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy and Net-Zero goals it is essential to fully decarbonise the emissions from the Food & Beverage (F&B) and other process industries by 2050\.
Biofuel Evolution along with biochemical engineering and synthetic biology experts will work to explore the development an innovative, decentralised energy generation and waste management system, BEBlock.
Our innovation will provide process industries in the UK with a localised solution to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and their reliance on external fossil-derived energy sources.
BEBlock uses novel engineering biology techniques to convert biogenic residues into biofuels and bioenergy for businesses, organisations, and communities on a decentralised scale. A Microbial Fuel Cell or Bio-electrochemical System will also be designed and integrated to treat BEBlock's effluent and create further value-added products that can be recycled back into the system. Thus, negating the depletion of natural resources and use of energy intensive biomass feedstock. This biochemical and bio-electrochemical concept with highly characterised microbes and electroactive bacteria will be a first of its kind.
The outcome of this project will be an experimental proof of concept, BEBlock, that will enable the team from Biofuel Evolution to validate the technology and progress towards demonstrating BEBlock at a trial site contributing towards the UK's net-zero and Industrial Decarbonisation strategies.
