The project aims to established the composition-microstructure-architecture-property relationships to help in developing the next generation MLCCs for electric vehicle applications. Using knowledge of the defect chemistry of BaTiO3 we will be able to design new/modified BaTiO3-based formulations and process thick film dielectrics of these materials using our new slot-die facilities (Henry Royce Institute) to create proto-type devices based on existing architectures (single layers based on core-shell composite grains) and/or novel architectures (eg, bilayers of dielectrics) as recently proposed by our group. The materials and proto-types will be characterised and tested in both Sheffield and AVX, as appropriate. AVX will also build MLCCs of promising materials/architectures using their production facilities.
