Description
The aim of this project is to characterise the mineralogical and chemical properties of the thermally altered CI and CM chondrites. The project will use X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and trace element abundance measurements. Results will be placed in the context of hydration and dynamic heating experiments aimed at understanding the timescales for the mineralogical changes. In addition, the student will measure the infrared signatures associated with altered and un-altered samples under Earth-like and asteroid-like conditions.
