The project objective is to develop and test powerful and efficient systems for visualisation, fusion and continuous validation of meteorological and oceanographic (MetOcean) model forecasts with real-time measurements. The goal is to provide information that is ‘fit for purpose’ for specific maritime applications, by blending and optimisation of very large and disparate data sources. BMT ARGOSS is a provider of marine environmental information and systems. Research is will: develop data assimilation and fusion techniques to combine model data with satellite and in-situ measurements; perform continuous quality improvement; select and access required data; assess the reliability of data through continuous error analysis feedback; and use visualisation to aid the interpretation of the data and its quality. Enhanced capability resulting from the project will be piloted with key clients in three key areas of BMT ARGOSS’ existing business: ship performance optimisation; oil platform operational support; and forecasting for offshore wind farms. Research will be carried out in collaboration with the Reading e-Science Centre, which has led several successful UK e-Science projects. Ocean Expert, a specialist consultancy, will provide technical project review and end user feedback.
