The UK electricity market is expected to see some fundamental changes in the years to 2020
and in particular beyond into 2030 and 2050 timeframes as a result of the move towards a lowcarbon
energy system. The electricity generation sector could become more inflexible and
intermittent, which places a greater premium on having load that can follow generation; and
electricity demand could have wider ranges of demand including higher peaks as a result of
new load from heat pumps and EVs, which increases the benefits from shifting flexible load
to match to generation or cheaper price periods. High levels of intermittent generation will
lead to changes in the relationship between prices and demand, in particular the timing of
peak prices versus the timing of peak demand which increase the wholesale market benefit of
load shifting.
Alectrona has been established to develop a proprietary Smart Aggregation Manager, which
will enable a significantly more efficient – and cost effective – approach to integrating
electricity generation and usage. The SAM platform enables the creation of a co-operative
business model where energy suppliers and their customers work together for their mutual
benefit. This fundamentally changes the combative relationship between the energy industry
and its customers as they come together in a spirit of co-operation.
