This project aims to develop an integrated Energy\nManagement System (EMS) for rail vehicles to help reduce energy consumption and CO2\nemissions and make the network more energy efficient.\nTargeted at the retrofit market the aim is to develop a solution with the capability to not only\nmeter the usage of energy but also link this usage to the geo location at which it is being\ndrawn. Utilising a two way communications solution this information will be passed back to\nthe Energy Management Hub (EMH) where actual usage will be analysed identifying trends\nand energy usage black spots allowing operators and Network Rail (NR) to operate a more\nenergy efficient network.\nReal time usage data will be displayed to the driver through a Driver Advisory System (DAS)\ninstalled on the vehicle. This combined with control information sent via the EMH such as\nincidents and delays etc, will help the driver make informed decisions on where and when to\napply power to the vehicle to maintain both an energy efficient and punctual rail service.\nThe benefits of efficient energy management are well known however the particularly\ndifficult environment in which rail vehicles operate have meant that standard tools available\nfor normal applications are not suited to this industry. Power supplies on vehicles are\nparticularly dirty with spikes and troughs, multiple vehicles often operated by differing train\ncompanies draw power from the same source and by their very nature rail vehicles travel over\ngreat distances and are difficult to communicate with.\nBenefits of the proposed system: reduced energy consumption and greenhouse emissions,\nefficient operational information enabling decisions on scheduling whilst optimising energy\nconsumption, real energy consumption data for train operators and NR enabling accurate\nenergy billing and fairer apportionment of costs.\n\n"], "extra_text": ["", "\n\n\n\n"], "status": ["", "Closed"]}
