Such regulations are demanding they produce effluents with lower nutrient contents whilst reducing the energy use of their processes at the same time. Microalgae if used properly can treat these wastewaters in an efficient cost effective manner, but in order to do this at industrial scales a significant step forward in photobioreactor design and conditions is needed especially if the system is to be operated in temperate climates such as Northern Europe.
