Description
The PhD project aims at developing enhanced understanding of building use. The hypothesis is that through the rigorous assessment of buildings and the integration of the outcomes of this analysis into new building design and operation, continuous improvement can be achieved. It inquires as to how the built environment can effectively learn from how it is used, availing of increased sensing capabilities in modern buildings and wearable technology. More specifically, can the use of data analytics shift post occupancy evaluations (POEs) from 'static' to 'continuous' and how can lessons learnt be embedded in the design and operation of future buildings? Based on conceptual visions and theoretical models of the future of POEs, it is predicted that Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity within buildings can be leveraged to provide a platform that enables the continuous evaluation and management of buildings in use. The study will address a new form of POE, using large datasets, and test its feasibility. The focus will be on occupants' needs, and occupancy-driven energy management that also promotes energy savings.
In comparison to other industries, the construction industry has often been described as inefficient and unable to effectively improve. Establishing dynamic methods of post-occupancy evaluation using data from sensing equipment and a digital-based management infrastructure is a step towards a technologically advanced industry with more efficient construction and building design or adaptation techniques that are informed by analysis and lessons learnt.
