Description
Project Girona (Resilience) is a project located in the Coleraine area of Northern Ireland and more speci?cally homes and businesses that are served by the Loguestown sub station. Northern Ireland, as part of the Single Electricity Market for Ireland, has achieved world leading levels of Variable Renewable Energy absorption onto the grid on a recurring basis. Coleraine town and the hinterland serviced by Loguestown Primary sub-station is an area where the current network and substation assets are operating at its maximum load capacity, and fault level tolerances, during peak periods. It has resulted in some constraints on that part of the network. The project aims to optimise deployment and active management of assets including Low Carbon Technology and behind the meter storage in residential and commercial premises.
The key aims of Project Girona have been to Decarbonise, Decentralise, Digitalise and Democratise. Decarbonise through using renewable energy, Decentralise through generating, storing and managing energy at many points on lower voltage networks, Digitalise through predicting and analysing data to provide enhanced access, control and insights and finally to Democratise through making access to make the benefits accruing from deployment of renewable energy much more accessible for all homes and businesses, not just affluent homes or large businesses.
It has identified homes and business that would benefit from having renewable energy, as well as possible support to the grid. The project team are engaged with all the local stakeholders to map out a solutions using real data from installation of solar and battery. This includes the team using power flow analysis software within the catchment area.
The power flow analysis results have been endorsed by the Distribution Network Operator. It provides previously unavailable insight and clarity on how LCT and BTM storage impacts and benefits LV networks. This enables more renewables to access the power network.
Our Project Girona (Resilience) work is about deriving smarter algorithms from intensive data analytics, using a resource that enables the rigour and robustness required to be delivered in the shorter time available to the project due directly to the previous and ongoing impact of Covid 19\. The outcome will be a modelling capability, analysing data effectively and efficiently. This modelling capability is the basis of PARIS, the Predictive Analytical Renewables Integration System developed through Project Girona. PARIS enables more renewables, from more homes and businesses, to Prosper from the Energy Revolution through a Smart Local Energy System.
