This project focuses on the development of a 1:1 scale testing prototype of a bio-reactive facade component ; based on the technology of the soft facade system made of ETFE cushions components the prototypes will integrate the cultivation of microalgae within the cushions themselves, turning them into bioreactors; the opportunities offered by this new hybrid system are multiple as algae can function as an adaptive shading device, capture CO2 produced by the building's mechanical systems and release oxygen in return. Also microalgae can be harvested for bio-fuel. The system could find ideal application in building types with large roof and facades such as airports, stadia, shopping malls, schools and towers, turning them into solar adaptive buildings and renewable energy power plants.
