Some designs of wind turbine foundations are suffering failures and the industry needs to put in place measurement technologies to monitor what is happening to give confidence to the investor community that offshore wind is a viable investment and a solution towards cutting CO2 emissions. This project is focused on assessing the commercial viability of developing a novel level sensing system, data transmission, data analysis and realtime dynamic modelling system and end user web based interface that monitors multiple wind turbines. The project is innovative in thre key areas: 1. using high resolution high sample frequency level sensors to measure the condition of foundations, collect this and transmit it to shore. 2. analysis of the data to dynamically model tower response and condition in realtime. 3. make this available hrough a web browser interface for end users.
The key aims are to: 1. explore the necessary technology blocks to allow local data capture at a suitable sample frequency from a number of novel level sensors mounted on offshore wind turbine foundations/ towers and to transmit this to shore for onward transmission. 2. research cloud based data analysis and dynamic modelling to assess turbine tower condition in realtime from multiple turbines. 3. explore the technology to display and allow end user interpretation of the results through a web browser interface of the realtime data. Further aims are to research technology and commercial partners, review the competition, explore the routes to market and key organisations that are involved with the sales and maintenance process. To assess the IP situation. The outcome will be the evidenced technology path to follow if the commercial viability makes sense. The benefits will be significant to the offshore wind industry as well as Rutland Monitoring, insurance companies and the supply chain. The impact will be retaining confidence in the offshore wind industry as a viable commercial investment.
